Fighting Yen Psychology Is a Losing Battle

There are solid reasons for Japan to stay on the sidelines as the yen tumbles to levels not seen in four decades. Reversing the currency's direction was never simple, even in favorable conditions. Now, with global investors rushing back to the U.S. dollar, that task has become even more difficult.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government faces an uphill battle. The yen's weakness is driven by deep market forces, not just short-term speculation. The Bank of Japan's cautious approach to raising interest rates, compared to the Federal Reserve's aggressive tightening, has widened the gap between the two currencies. This makes the dollar more attractive and the yen less so.

Intervention in the currency market is a costly and often ineffective tool. Past attempts by Tokyo to prop up the yen have only slowed its decline, not stopped it. The government is well aware that fighting the psychology of the market is a losing game. Traders see the trend and pile on, betting against the yen with little fear of retaliation.

For now, Japan may have to accept the pain of a weak currency. Import costs rise, squeezing households and small businesses. But trying to force a turnaround when the world is buying dollars is like pushing against a door that is locked from the other side. The government can talk about action, but the market is not listening.
