There is a moment, every single day, that still catches me off guard. My hand drifts to the side of the bed, searching for the warm curve of a back that has not been there for months. My fingers find only the flat sheet, and for a split second, the absence feels like a physical blow. Why does the body insist on this ritual when the mind knows the truth? Why do we reach for a dog who is no longer there?
I have been trying to name this feeling, this phantom limb of the heart. It is not quite grief, which feels heavy and rooted. This is lighter, more reflexive, like a muscle memory that has outlived its purpose. Then I remembered a word from my Trinidadian childhood, a word my grandmother used when someone left the room but their presence lingered: "mamaguy." It means to fool or to deceive, but not cruelly. It is the gentle trick your own senses play on you when love is so deeply etched into your routine that your body refuses to accept the new reality.
So my hand reaches. My ears still perk up for the click of nails on the tile floor. My eyes scan the yard for a flash of brown fur. This is not denial. It is the body's own way of honoring what was. The mind has accepted the loss, but the body is slower, more faithful. It remembers the weight of a head on a lap, the rhythm of a breath in the dark, the joy that came home every evening. That reaching is not a sign of weakness. It is proof that love was not just felt, but lived in the very fibers of our being. And so we keep reaching, not because we are lost, but because we are still learning to live with a love that has no place to land.
