The Weight Loss Drug That Feeds the Disorder

The Weight Loss Drug That Feeds the Disorder

The promise of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy is simple: they quiet the hunger signals, making it easier to eat less and lose weight. But for a growing number of patients, that silence comes with a dangerous side effect. These drugs suppress appetite without asking why the appetite was broken in the first place. For people with a history of eating disorders, this distinction can be the difference between recovery and relapse.

Doctors are now reporting cases where patients with anorexia or bulimia have turned to these drugs as a tool to accelerate weight loss. The medication does not treat the underlying psychological need for control or the distorted body image. Instead, it amplifies the disorder by removing the physical cues that normally signal starvation. One patient described the experience as "a license to starve" because the drug eliminated the discomfort that used to stop her from skipping meals.

The problem is compounded by the way these drugs are prescribed. Many patients obtain them through online services or general practitioners who do not screen for disordered eating. A patient who appears to have a healthy relationship with food on paper may actually be using the drug to sustain a dangerous pattern. The medication feeds the disorder by making it easier to ignore the body's protests.

Experts are calling for mandatory screening before prescribing any GLP-1 drug. They argue that appetite suppression is not a solution for everyone. For some, it is simply a new way to hide the same old problem. Until the medical community addresses this gap, the weight loss revolution will continue to leave a vulnerable group behind.
