Why Your "Must-Have" Dating List Might Be Sabotaging Your Love Life

July 29, 2026 - 23:09

Why Your

There is a difference between having a preference and clinging to a rigid checklist, says relationship coach Amy Chan. She warns that one common dating habit has absolutely no ability to predict whether a relationship will be happy or stable. That habit is relying on a long list of superficial criteria before you even give someone a real chance.

Chan explains that many people approach dating like they are shopping for a product. They look for specific height, income, job title, or even the way someone dresses. While having standards is healthy, mistaking these surface-level traits for indicators of long-term compatibility is a mistake. A partner who checks every box on paper can still be emotionally unavailable, dismissive, or fundamentally mismatched in values.

The real predictors of a happy relationship, according to Chan, are things like how you handle conflict together, whether you share core values, and if you feel safe being your true self. These qualities cannot be spotted on a dating profile or during a first coffee date if you are too busy scanning for your list of requirements.

Chan suggests shifting the focus from "Does this person fit my ideal image?" to "How do I feel when I am with this person?" If you feel anxious, judged, or bored despite them meeting your checklist, the relationship is unlikely to last. On the other hand, someone who surprises you and does not match your initial list might offer the emotional connection you actually need.

The bottom line is that a checklist gives you a false sense of control. It filters out potential partners who could be a great match simply because they do not fit a narrow mold. Letting go of this habit opens the door to relationships built on genuine connection rather than arbitrary expectations.
