In my book "Bluebird, or the Invention of Happiness," Lucy loved her husband despite the great difficulties of their life. She did not have an easy marriage. There was no money, no stability, and plenty of reasons to walk away. Yet she stayed. Not out of obligation or fear, but because love gave her something that comfort never could.
We live in a time that often treats love as a nice extra, something to pursue after the bills are paid and the career is set. But Lucy's story reminds me that love is not a luxury. It is the thing that makes hardship bearable. When life is hard, love does not erase the struggle. It changes how we carry it. Lucy's love for her husband did not fix their poverty or erase their arguments. It gave her a reason to keep going, to find small joys in a difficult day.
This is not a fairy tale. It is the quiet truth that many people discover in their own lives. Love does not have to be perfect to be powerful. It can be messy, frustrating, and exhausting. But it also holds us together when everything else falls apart. In a world that pushes us to prioritize safety and success, Lucy's choice is a reminder that love is not weakness. It is the most practical thing we can have.
