Many people start a new diet or a healthy eating plan with the best intentions. They tell themselves they need to be "good" and avoid certain foods. But new research suggests that this very mindset can backfire in a big way. The problem is not the food itself, but the effort to restrict it.
Studies show that when people label foods as "bad" and try to cut them out completely, they often end up feeling more out of control around those foods. The act of restriction creates a psychological pressure. It makes the forbidden food more tempting and harder to resist. This can lead to a cycle where a person restricts, then feels deprived, then eventually gives in and eats a lot of the "bad" food. After that, they feel guilty and try to restrict even harder, which only makes the next binge more likely.
The real issue is not a lack of willpower. It is the mental energy spent on policing every bite. This constant effort to be "good" can make people feel anxious and stressed around food. They stop trusting their own hunger and fullness cues. Instead of eating intuitively, they follow rigid rules that are hard to keep up with.
Experts suggest a different approach. Instead of trying to be "good," focus on being flexible. Allow yourself to eat all foods without guilt. When you take away the moral labels and the pressure to restrict, food loses its power over you. You can enjoy a treat without feeling like you failed. Over time, this reduces the feeling of being out of control and creates a healthier, more peaceful relationship with eating.
