When neurodivergent people speak about "neurodiversity pride," we are not talking about a cheerful slogan or a feel-good campaign. We are talking about survival. The concept goes far beyond celebrating differences in how brains work. It is a direct response to a world that often tells us we are broken, too much, or not enough.
For decades, the dominant narrative around conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others has been one of deficit and disorder. The focus has been on fixing what is seen as wrong. But pride shifts the lens. It says that our ways of thinking, sensing, and interacting are not mistakes of nature. They are valid variations of the human experience. Without this pride, many of us internalize shame. We hide our needs, mask our traits, and burn out trying to be someone we are not.
Pride is also a political stance. It demands accommodation and respect, not pity. When we say we are proud, we reject the idea that we must be cured to be worthy. We insist that society must change, not just us. This is not about ignoring real challenges. It is about refusing to let those challenges define our worth. In a world that still pathologizes difference, neurodiversity pride is an act of resistance. It is how we survive with our dignity intact.
